CREOL, The Center for Research and Education in Optics and Lasers, FPCE, the Florida Photonics Center of Excellence, and the Townes Laser Institute are research centers within the college. The College of Optics & Photonics has grown to an internationally recognized institute with 29 faculty members, 14 faculty with joint appointments, 9 faculty with courtesy appointments, and 5 emeritus professors, 54 research scientists and 160 graduate students with research activities covering all aspects of optics, photonics, and lasers, including lasers, fiber optics, semiconductor and integrated photonic devices, nonlinear and quantum optics, and imaging science. UCF Photonics Incubator
The Photonics Incubator is part of the UCF Incubator Network and is located on the UCF campus within the facilities of CREOL & FPCE, The College of Optics and Photonics at the University of Central Florida. The Photonics Incubator is one of the ways that The College of Optics and Photonics fulfills one element of its mission, namely to “Aid the development of Florida’s and the nation’s high technology industries.” Companies in the Photonics Incubator have ready access to the CREOL faculty, graduate students, and CREOL laboratory facilities including the Nano-Fabrication CleanRoom and its Leica 5000 e-beam lithography instrument. In addition, the companies have ready access to other excellent UCF resources including the staff of the Office of Research and Commercialization and the Venture Lab in the College of Business.

UCF Business Incubator
The UCF Business Incubator Program provides client companies with the experience and insight needed to create successful companies through relationships it has created with its network of experienced entrepreneurs, professional service providers, economic development partners, small business service providers, university experts as well as a dedicated staff. Since its founding in 1999, the UCF Business Incubation Program has helped more than 130 emerging companies (including 70 current clients) create over $500 million in annual revenue and more than 1000 new jobs with an average salary of $59,000. With seven facilities across the metro Orlando community, the Business Incubation Program is a collaboration in economic development between UCF, Orange County, the City of Orlando, Seminole County, the City of Winter Springs, Lake County, the City of Leesburg, and the Florida High Tech Corridor Council.

University of South Florida
The University of South Florida is a large urban research university with optics and photonics research distributed throughout several interdisciplinary centers and institutes. USF is designated as a “Research University” by the Carnegie Foundation, and had over $300 million dollars in research grants during the past year. Optics and Photonics research span the disciplines of the College of Marine Science on Satellite IR imaging of ocean phytoplankton, development of new biosensors using LED fluorescence of bio markers at the Center for BioDefense, to research in DNA mapping using laser based genome sequencing at the Moffitt Cancer Center. Much of the technology and intellectual property can be developed through the USF Research Foundation for use by industry often located at the USF Research Park.
